TASTE OF THAI SELECT: Thai Basil (Toronto)

Thai Basil has been serving authentic Thai food in Toronto's Annex neighbourhood for about ten years. Located at 467 Bloor Street West between Spadina and Bathurst, Thai Basil focuses on, you guessed it: basil. This very popular Thai herb is different than basil used in Western cooking and is a big part of the flavour in many Thai dishes.

We were seated at a small table near the back of the diningroom. The decor is very modern, and we were told that most items in the restaurant came from Thailand including all the decorations, kitchen implements and even the cutlery. The service and food were both great, and although we arrived rather late in the evening mid-week, the place was still busy which in this restaurant-centric neighbourhood is definitely a testament to the great food.

Ginger Lemongrass Iced Tea and Ginger Lemon Tea

The ginger lemongrass iced tea had a strong ginger heat in the tea offset by sweetness. Very refreshing! The ginger lemon tea was smooth and pleasing.

Mango Salad

A dish made with ripe mango, sweet and salty dressing, and a bit of citrus. Crunchy fried onions on top, and sweet sliced red onion in the salad.

Basil Chili Noodle

This moderately spicy dish made with noodles, veggies and tofu had a fresh and slightly salty taste. The fresh veggies were still a bit crunchy giving a great contrast to the noodles.

Thai Eggplants and Minced Pork

Served in a hot stone pot, spicy and lots of garlic. Perfectly cooked eggplant, tender and salty pork in a rich sauce.

Thai Red Curry Duck

Tender duck, tomatoes, peppers and green eggplants in a mild, creamy curry sauce. Coconut milk, grapes and pineapple for sweetness.

Tapioca Cakes

Although they look quite rich, the taste was light and the portion size perfect. A great way to end a savoury meal.

Although most of the dishes we had were spicy, we were told that any dish can be made with any level of spiciness from mild, all the way to "Thai Spicy" to accommodate any taste. If you frequent the Annex and are looking for a quality meal, stop by Thai Basil.
