If you've spent any significant amount of time in downtown Toronto over the past few decades then Salad King is sure to be a familiar name. To those of you who haven't stumbled upon this unique gem, then you're in for a delicious treat! Located at 340 Yonge Street, Salad King has been serving up amazing food and value for over 24 years. Their focus is on using high quality ingredients and keeping things consistent, and the constant hum of activity in the place at any hour of the day or night is an indication that they're doing things right.
Back in the 90s Salad King started off as a self-service place where Thai food wasn't the only thing on the menu. But over time the focus shifted to Thai, and the restaurant changed to a full-service sit-down model. Their original location was just across the street from where they are now. In 2010 the building collapsed and owners relocated to their current second floor location, keeping many of the same design elements including clean modern interior, stainless steel tables at the back, and the infamous chili scale. Choose from 1 all the way to 20 chilis in your meal! The higher numbers are definitely not for the uninitiated, but even if you don't like spicy food most dishes can be made as mild as you like.
We arrived at Salad King after the lunch rush so that we could have a chat with Alan (the owner) and get a sense of what makes Salad King tick. Being in the same area for so long has allowed him to really learn about the trends and demographics. Although a lot has changed around Yonge and Dundas, loyal customers keep coming back because of the excellent quality and value, and because Salad King has been careful to keep their menu consistent over the years. With an excellent selection of meat and meat-free options, as well as a variety of different types of flavour, everyone is sure to find their favourite dish.
Bangkok Stir Fry
Made with tofu, glass noodles and fresh veggies this dish had a very fresh and light taste, yet it was filling. The veggies are not overcooked so they still have a nice crunch and the tofu had an excellent texture. Also available with chicken or shrimp.
One of Salad King's most popular dishes! Orange beef has slices of breaded crispy beef in a sweet and sour sauce. Fresh veggies and rice complement the beef nicely, and the orange flavour makes this dish very absolutely delightful! Also available with chicken.
This lovely curry dish is a blend of massamam and yellow curry, served with fresh veggies, tender tofu and rice. Absolutely delicious!
Whether you frequent the Yonge and Dundas area or are planning a visit to Toronto, if you're looking for an incredible meal with dishes to suit any taste Salad King should definitely be first on your list!
