TASTE OF THAI SELECT: Sorn Thai

August 27, 2015

Located on Yonge Street a few blocks north of Eglinton is a small yet lively Thai restaurant. Offering authentic Thai dishes in clean and pleasant diningroom where attentive service is key, Sorn Thai at 2550 Yonge Street has been serving great tasting Thai dishes since 1995.

The owners Albert and Jenna come from different backgrounds with Albert formerly running an air conditioning business, and Jenna having come from Thailand in search of a business opportunity which she found in Sorn Thai. Twenty years on Toronto's main street proves they are doing things right. We visited rather late in the dinner service and the place was still busy.

The diningroom is simple and cozy. We sat near the front window which has an excellent view of the Yonge and Eglinton hustle and bustle. A small patio is available during the warmer months. The wait staff are very attentive and we are told that most of the staff has been working at Sorn Thai for at least ten years.

Mango Salad

We started with the mango salad which was very fresh and had a great crunch. The sauce was a nice blend of sweet and salty. A great way to start a meal.

Basil Eggplant

A great authentic vegetarian Thai dish, the basil eggplant comes with a garlic chili sauce and is served with rice and chili sauce. If you tend to avoid eggplant because you dislike the texture, there is no need to worry here. The eggplant had a perfect soft texture that was delicious.

Garlic Shrimp

The garlic shrimp is a delicious dish with perfectly cooked shrimp prepared with a peppery and garlicy sauce. The shrimp had a fresh and tender texture. Served with crispy noodles and a fresh salad.

Vegetarian Pad Thai

An absolutely delicious take on this classic Thai dish, the vegetarian Pad Thai had a nice sweet flavour. You can choose to kick up the spice with some chili. The tofu had a great texture and the vegetables had just the right amount of crunch.

If you live or work in the Yonge and Eglinton area and are looking for an authentic Thai dining experience, check out Sorn Thai. The folks are friendly and the food is wonderful. You will definitely come back again and again!
