TASTE OF THAI SELECT: The Thai

Situated just north of the Roncesvalles Village at Bloor Street and Indian Road in Toronto is a humble looking Thai restaurant. Although it might look like just any other neighbourhood restaurant from the outside, the food that is being served up inside is something really special! Located at 1675 Bloor Street West, The Thai aims to please customers with both typical western-style Thai fare as well as unique and interesting dishes that go for a more authentic and bold taste.

The quaint dininroom features nice lighting and a very cozy feeling. Lots of Thai art and decorations adorn the walls. The current owners are Rungcheewan (Nut) and Chawanratch (Benz) took over from the previous owners about four years ago. They have been building a local customer base through word of mouth and have many regular customers including families. One person liked the food so much he made a hand-drawn thank you note of himself eating Thai food.

The popular dishes are Pad Thai, Cashew Nut Chicken and Green Curry Chicken. They are particularly proud of the Kua Gai (stir-friend noodles with chicken) and the River Prawn. They also offer a variety of unique and tasty vegean dishes from their "Vegan's Choice" menu. Thai Thai also prepare all their own curry pastes and chili sauces fresh in-house. The Thai has a new menu coming in late 2015.

Thai Iced Tea Slush

A unique and refreshing take on the traditional Thai iced tea drink, The Thai offers a slushy version that tastes less intense than the typical preparation and also has a very nice texture.

Spicy Curry Vegan Duck

A rich tasting dish with simulated duck, vegetables and rice. The texture of the "duck" was absolutely excellent and was a very nice alternative to typical squares of fried tofu. There was a nice amount of spice but not overpowering.

Yen Ta Fo (seafood noodle soup)

This bold dish made with shrimp, mussels and squid, served with thick rice noodles and chips is a really authentic dish just like you would find in Thailand.

If you are in the neighbourhood and looking for something a bit different, check out The Thai. The folks are friendly and the food is absolultely delicious! Tell them we sent you!
